I am a Scientist: WonderLab Celebrates the National Week of the Young Child
Week of the Young Child is a national event, April 16-20, spearheaded by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. In conjunction, WonderLab is proud to present a series of events and programs designed for children ages birth through 8. At these events children will meet professional scientists, play with diverse scientific content and build their identities as a scientific learners.
Tuesday, April 17: I Am A Geologist!
Explore WonderLab’s own, giant, indoor cave. Investigate fossils. Touch different rocks. Receive a rock collection starter kit. Geologists from the Indiana Geological and Water Survey will be at the museum all day sharing their expertise. Special activities: 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 18: I am an Archeologist!
Archeology is about a lot more than digging in the dirt – but that sure is fun! Discovery Time (10 a.m.) and Science Sprouts (4:15 p.m.) will feature touching and playing with 3D prints of ancient Mayan instruments, a visit from a professional archaeologist, and, of course, some excellent dirt digging! Late afternoon archeology exploration (aka: Bonus dirt digging!) is happening from 4:45-6 p.m. Use real archeology tools to search for and sort “artifacts”, visit an archeological site in virtual reality, and practice grinding corn to make cornflour in the style of the ancient maya.
Thursday, April 19: I am an Astronomer!
Science Sprouts (9:15 a.m. and 10 a.m.) will be astronomy themed. Late afternoon activities will feature more out of this world space exploration, a visit from a professional astronomer, and the chance to get hands-on with space rocks!
Friday, April 20: I am a Physicist!
Learn about the Laws of Motion. Play with with ramps, rolling, and wind resistance. Later in the day meet a professional physicist. Special activities from 9:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, April 21: I am a Marine Biologist!
Even the youngest learners can explore and protect the oceans! In honor of the International Year of the Reef explore coral, touch sand slime, learn about ocean conservation, and build your own diving suit out of recycled materials. Meet a professional Marine Biologist and examine real scuba gear. Special activities from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
