Group Chaperones

Group visits by children are more successful and safe when there is adequate supervision by adult chaperones. Chaperones guide children to and from the building, help children get the most from their self-directed exploration experience, and ensure that children have all their belongings when they leave the museum. We recommend these ratios:

Preschool - Grade 1. We recommend one adult for every 3-5 children.

Grades 1-12. We recommend one adult for every 5-10 children, depending on grade.

Teachers and group leaders should communicate with chaperones before the museum visit to help them understand their responsibilities. Here are some helpful suggestions for chaperones:

• Before you arrive, learn the names and faces of the students in your group
• Before you arrive, make sure the students in your group know your name and face
• Stay in touch with the teacher regarding scheduled transition and departure times
• Create a shopping schedule of small groups to avoid a delayed departure
• Explore the exhibit galleries and gift store with your group
• Ask How, What, When, Where and Why questions to stimulate thinking
• Encourage experimentation and learning through experience
• Ask museum staff (blue aprons) or volunteers (green aprons) if you have a question
• Enjoy your visit!
